Paid, Barter or Affiliate: Which Brand Collaboration Is Right for You?
Not every brand deal is the same. Knowing the main collaboration types helps creators decide what to accept and helps brands choose the right model for their budget and goal.
Paid collaborations
The brand pays a fee for agreed content, such as a reel, a set of stories or a post. This is the clearest deal for both sides: the creator is paid for their work, and the brand gets fixed deliverables on a fixed date.
Best for: launches, campaigns with a clear message, and creators with steady engagement.
Barter collaborations
The creator receives a product or service, such as skincare, a hotel stay or a meal, in exchange for content. Barter can work well when the product has real value to the creator and the content asked for is small.
Watch out for: barter requests that expect the same work as a paid deal. If a brand wants several reels, usage rights or a tight deadline, it should be a paid deal.
Affiliate deals
The creator shares a unique link or discount code and earns a commission on each sale. Affiliate deals reward creators whose audience buys, and they let brands pay for results.
Best for: creators with loyal, buying audiences and products with clear prices, like fashion, beauty and gadgets. It works best alongside a fixed fee, not instead of one.
Unpaid collaborations
Features, shout-outs or collabs with no payment or product. These can make sense between creators, for a cause you support, or to start a relationship with a brand you love. Choose them on purpose, not by default.
UGC content
The creator makes content that the brand posts on its own pages or uses in ads, often without it appearing on the creator's profile. Usage rights and how long the brand can use the content should always be agreed and priced.
Brand ambassador deals
A long-term partnership, usually several months, with regular content and often exclusivity in the category. Ambassador deals give creators steady income and give brands a consistent face.
Events and launches
Creators attend and cover store openings, product launches or experiences. Agree travel, time on site and the content expected afterwards.
